myoActivationER is a condensed adaptation of the myoActivation® methodology that has been developed to provide a rapid algorithmic approach to assessment and treatment of common clinical presentations of pain and movement impairments in the emergency department or in an urgent care clinic.

Assessment involves a brief history followed by 1 to 4 relevant standardized tests of anatomical function.  Treatment entails low risk, non-pharmaceutical needle insertions into dysfunctional soft tissues. myoActivationER may reduce the need for investigations in many patients and facilitates significantly reduced time to pain improvement allowing improved patient flow and satisfaction.

The workshop will focus on learning both rapid biomechanical assessment and hands-on treatment skills in paired practice exercises.  Each participant takes turns in being the needler and needlee.  No medication is injected.

Pre-reading will entail 2.0 hours in preparation for the 7.0 instructional hours in the workshop.  There will be an instructor to participant ratio of 1:4 or 1:2 pairs in the practice exercises.

Participants will receive a kit of all necessary medical supplies required for 8 patient treatments at the end of the course.

Physicians, medical residents, and nurse practitioners are eligible to attend.

For surgeons, medical specialists, family physicians and nurse practitioners working in Northern Health only. Surgical, medical, and family physician residents are welcome to attend.

The main objective of this workshop is for participants to learn the myoActivation technique of scar release in order to integrate this procedure into their clinical practice. Scar release is a simple procedure that can dramatically impact the prehabilitation process and improve postoperative pain and dysfunction.

This half-day workshop will review the pathophysiology of scars, mechanisms of tissue change secondary to scar release, patient assessment, treatment technique, patient responses to treatment, and important aftercare considerations. A presentation patients will be assessed and treated in real time to illustrate the changes in subjective pain and objective movement.

Through practice exercises in pairs, participants will experience the sensation of treatment and the changes in range of movement from release of scars utilizing a simple needling technique. This skill can be immediately integrated into clinical practice.

Participants (except residents) will be paid at the sessional rate for 0.5 hours pre-reading, 3.0 hours workshop participation, and 1.0 hour for engagement in QI evaluation activities.

Scar Release Workshop

  • Bruce County Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Centre (map)

myoActivation® is a system of pain care that encompasses novel approaches to history taking, physical examination, non-pharmaceutical needling treatment, and aftercare.  An essential component to the myoActivation methodology is releasing the myofascial tension inherent in surgical or traumatic scars and remnants of soft tissue injury.

This workshop reviews the pathophysiology of scars, the mechanisms of tissue activation by cutting tip needles, patient assessment, treatment technique, patient responses to treatment, and aftercare.

Two presentation patients will be assessed and treated in real time to illustrate the changes in subjective pain and objective movement.

Through practice exercises in pairs, participants will experience the sensation of treatment and the changes in range of movement from release of scars as well as learn the techniques of scar release.

Pre-reading will entail 0.5 hours in preparation for the 2.5 instructional hours in the workshop.  There will be an instructor:participant ratio of 1:4 or 1:2 pairs in the practice exercises.

Instructors for this workshop will be Greg Siren MD CCFP FCFP and Andrew Jeffrey MD CCFP(EM).
